Building Self-Trust Through Small, Everyday Decisions

There’s an interesting connection I’ve been exploring with clients recently.

Maybe we want to make a bold move somewhere in our life, but the fear is there. Can I do this? Will I be okay?

And sometimes this is where we stay. Going around in these questions, waiting to feel more sure.

Something I’ve been drawing clients back to is this: how we do the small things is how we do the big things.

When we want to trust ourselves with bigger decisions, it helps to look at how we’re exercising that muscle in the smaller ways.

Where we put our own knowing aside

Am I asking other people what I should do when, underneath it all, I already know?

Do I leave decisions to someone else — even something like where to go for dinner — when I actually have a preference I’m not expressing?

Do I notice a nudge, then talk myself out of it?

When we repeatedly put aside what we think or feel, it can become harder to trust ourselves.

But it works in reverse too.

Small opportunities to build self-trust

A daily decision becomes an opportunity to pause and make space to hear ourselves.

What do I think about this?
What do I feel?
What would I choose?

And when we act on that, even in a small way, we give ourselves an experience of listening to ourselves and following through.

That might mean expressing a preference, making a decision without asking someone else to reassure us, or keeping a small commitment we’ve made to ourselves.

We begin to build trust through these everyday moments.

So if there’s something bigger you’re wanting to move towards, consider where you could practise trusting yourself today.

What’s one small decision you could make, or commitment you could follow through on, that would strengthen your trust in yourself?
